Service and Integrity A Conversation with Esther by Jason Wu

Our editorial team recently interviewed Esther Wang, an outstanding student from Sendelta. We had a long interview that lasted about 45 minutes. The whole process went smoothly. I was deeply impressed by her personal style and individual consciousness. She hardly hid her sense of humor and friendly smile. It is relaxing to speak with her, and she never seems embarrassed, no matter the topic. When we asked a long question, she always combined different perspectives and critical thinking, integrating unique experiencesexperience with her. We definitely received a comprehensive reply.

While we paid attention to her answer, our team could easily find that her self-awareness is very meaningful and practical to societyto the society. She said, “MyThe core values are definitely service and integrity.” Elaborating on question three—"As the president of "Hearts Roaming with StarsHeart and Stars Journey," what was the greatest challenge in organizing the InspireMe Festival from planning to being featured in the news? How did you address it?” She said that language barriers and communication accuracy were the biggest challenges for her. LThat is true about language barriers were indeed an obstacle for her because she actually is an American-born ChineseABC. Leave a hook in here. (unfinished?). She also provided some real occasions when she met difficulty. For example, she needed to make sure to communicate clearly with her club members repeatedly, because her sense of responsibility does not allow her to convey misleading information because of language barriers. On the other hand, it will also be an opportunity to improve her Chinese ability. Indeed, she completely solved challenges. Her methodology totally impressed me. She would preferentially address pivotal issues and emphasize team collaboration. Effective allocation of assignments also plays a significant role. All of these methods undoubtedly avoid the drawbacks of her language as well as extend the advantages of her organizational capability. Sensible decision-making and extraordinary wisdom flatten the tough challenges.

We have mentioned that Esther is an ABC, which means American-born Chinese. Our team was really curious why she decided to come back to China to study. That was one of the questions on our list. She said, “Because of a sense of belonging to China.” Simple conclusion, but it can generalize her answer. Her family came from China; she is eager to know her parents, older generations, and ancestral home. The first step was to understand the roots of her family—the culture, local customs, and traditions that shaped them. Even though she was not directly influenced by these environmental factors, her appearance and character remained untouched. She clearly realizes what part of the soul is lost when nostalgia first emerges. I believe that good decisions lead to good consequences. Obviously, she already knows the kernel.

Furthermore, we can strongly feelcan feel the spirit of servicethe service spirit from her speechspeech strongly. The fifthquestion was five—“What experience has motivated you to consistently engage in lots of activities? What moments moved you the most?” First of all, she gladly shared her experience ather lastherin the last school. She made great efforts to recount her experiences living in the USA, delivering a vivid and engaging speech. Concretely, she was motivated by the club that combines multifarious categories like hobbies, interests, and specialization activities in the last school. She not only enjoyed participating in the club but also underscored the importance of students’ sense of belonging to school. Therefore, when she first became a Sendelta student, she was very eager to expand the variety of school clubs and aimed to create a sense of belonging for all Sendelta students. She said, “Team spirit and team identity both connect to a sense of belonging with school.” That is why she consistently engages in lots of club activities.

Actually, if you have a chance to talk to her before, you will simply find passion, strength, and integrity in her speech. Some students studying hard tend to get promising prospects or a profitable job. This is not a mistake but a reality. However, Esther is rather different. The radiance of service always shines through everything she does. For example, Esther provided plenty of background information within her answer. Specifically, she narrated the special group—autism, which is a minority in society and is short of respect, and discrimination typically occurs. At the “InspireMe Festival,” which is in collaboration with students from Harrow International School Shenzhen, there are numerous stalls that integrate an assortment of entertainment like puzzles, Lego, and books. Esther as president, hosting 40 families with autistic children who come from an organization that cares about children with intellectual disabilitiesmental health problems. A great connection always brings outgorgeous things out. Esther said, “Due to discrimination and socialstigma, they ashttps://theguardianfoundation.org/assets/files/behind-the-headlines-resources/behind-the-headlines-newspaper-roles-aug-2021.pdf a(minority ) typically do not have the courage to go outside their home. Thus, they lack interaction with real society. This activity provided a chance for those people to have, and they will have an enjoyable experience outside of their homes. Furthermore, it is a great opportunity for international school students to learn about these typically overlooked peopleminority people.” She indeed wants to change something in the world via her own efforts. We asked her questions regarding long-term schemes or goals at least three times. Her answers are usually about how to help people better or how to serve society better.

To sum up, she is a person with depth and humanity. She is not a realist but an implementer who cherishes her dreams. She always notices something that is invisible to people, but that’s alsoit is necessary to be visible to people. I believe hHer spirit of service, as well as integrity, is from within because noble virtues cannot be feigned.
